Scott Ferry

i want to write about death but the xmas music

is cloyingly positive
my next door neighbor passed recently

she was 90 something, met her husband
in WWII and lived in this modest rambler

since 1959 raised 3 kids and now kept
an eye on her teetering husband

i saw then both out weeding and planting fall
chrysanthemums in october

she fell and buckled her knee
in early november

and just yesterday as my father in law
and her daughter helped a man

get his truck unstuck from the ice
she told him of her death

she was german and tough but sweet
always giving my children christmas candy

and easter eggs but now she
is gone

this street has known her for 63 years
i still see her husband walking around the block

with their daughter bracing his steps
and i think he won’t be separated

from her for too long
not even one more xmas

when i see them finally reunited
i envision them in europe newly in love

invisible and glowing arm in arm
years of song inside

their eyes
